First Date Ideas in Maui That Aren't Just the Beach

··7 min read·4 views

Maui first dates that cost under $40, take under two hours and don't require a 4am alarm. Organized by region so the date doesn't start with an argument about driving.

Most first date ideas in Maui lists assume you're on your honeymoon. Sunset catamaran, Mama's Fish House, Road to Hana. Great trips. Terrible first dates. If you live on Maui, or you're seeing someone who does, you need a first date that costs under $40, takes under two hours, and doesn't require a 4am wake-up.

This is the local version. It's organized by region, because on Maui the first question isn't "what should we do," it's "where do you live." Kihei to Paia is 30 minutes. Kihei to Kaanapali is closer to an hour. Pick a date that doesn't start with an argument about driving. Why first dates on Maui are different

  • It's a small island. You'll run into each other again at Foodland. Keep first dates light and public.
  • Everyone has a geography. South side (Kihei, Wailea), West side (Kaanapali, Napili), Upcountry (Kula, Makawao, Pukalani), North Shore (Paia, Haiku) and Central (Kahului, Wailuku). Meeting halfway in Central is a real strategy.
  • West Maui is still rebuilding. Lahaina town remains largely closed after the 2023 wildfire. Kaanapali and Napili resorts and restaurants are open and locals welcome the support, but be thoughtful about where you suggest meeting.
  • Locals and visitors mix. Plenty of singles here are seasonal workers or six-month transplants. Our guide to the best places to meet singles in Maui covers where they actually hang out.

Coffee and daytime first dates

Low commitment, easy exit, full daylight. The best first date format on the island.

Paia Bay Coffee. Garden seating a block from the beach in Paia town. Order, walk down to Paia Bay, sit on the sand. If it's going well, wander Baldwin Avenue's shops. The North Shore locals' default.

Makawao town. Upcountry's cowboy town. Get a cream puff or a stick donut at Komoda Store and Bakery (go before noon, they sell out), then walk the galleries on Baldwin Avenue. Cool, quiet, and very different from the beach-town vibe.

Maui Coffee Roasters, Kahului. The halfway-point coffee date. Unpretentious, big parking lot, and five minutes from everything in Central.

Wailuku First Friday. Market Street closes to traffic on the first Friday of the month for food, music and craft vendors. Free, walkable, and crowded enough that a first date doesn't feel like an interview.

Sunset first dates

Sunset on Maui is early (around 5:45pm in winter, 7:10pm in summer) and free. These are the spots locals actually use.

Keawakapu Beach. Where South Kihei becomes Wailea. Long, quiet, and the sunset lines up right off the beach. Park at the south end lot.

Wailea Beach Path. The paved oceanfront walk that runs behind the Wailea resorts. You can do a sunset stroll without buying anything, and if the date is going well, Monkeypod Kitchen's happy hour is at the top of the path.

Kamaole Beach Park III. Kihei's locals' beach. Grassy park, picnic tables, easy parking. Grab takeout from a Kihei spot and eat it here.

Ho'okipa Lookout. On the North Shore just past Paia. Watch the windsurfers, then walk down to the east end of the beach at dusk, where green sea turtles haul out onto the sand most evenings. Stay well back from them. It's the law and it's the right thing to do.

Upcountry first dates

Kula and Ulupalakua are 3,000 feet up, cooler, and feel like a different island. A great second-location idea if the coffee date goes well.

Ali'i Kula Lavender. Walking paths through lavender fields with a view down to the ocean. Small entry fee, lavender scones at the gift shop.

MauiWine. The tasting room in the old Ulupalakua Ranch buildings. Flights of pineapple and estate wines, a lawn with huge trees, no pressure to linger. Best 3pm date on Maui.

Surfing Goat Dairy. Feed goats, taste cheese, drive back down through Kula. Silly in a way that breaks the ice.

Kula Country Farms. Seasonal, but in October the pumpkin patch and farm stand are open and locals treat it as a date. Strawberries in spring.

Haleakala at sunset. Sunrise requires a 3am start and a reservation. Sunset requires neither. Drive up around 4pm, bring every layer you own, and watch the sun drop below the clouds from the summit. The park entry fee is per vehicle.

Happy hour and casual dinner

For a first date that includes a drink, keep it to a place with a bar, a view and a way to leave after one.

  • Maui Brewing Co, Kihei. The tasting room is big, loud and casual. Pitchers, pizza, no reservation.
  • Monkeypod Kitchen, Wailea. Daily happy hour with discounted pizzas and mai tais. Sit at the bar.
  • Paia Fish Market. Walk-up counter, picnic tables, the best fish tacos on the North Shore. Share a plate.
  • Hula Grill, Kaanapali. The Barefoot Bar is literally in the sand at Whalers Village. Live music, sunset, cheap enough for a first date.

Active first dates

If you both surf, hike or paddle, lean into it. Just keep it short.

  • Snorkel at Ulua Beach (Wailea) or Black Rock (Kaanapali). Both are easy entries with turtles and fish close to shore. Morning is calmer.
  • Paddleboard off Kihei. Rentals on South Kihei Road, flat water in the morning, an hour is plenty.
  • Iao Valley. A short paved walk to the needle in a lush valley 15 minutes from Wailuku. Non-residents need an online reservation; residents walk in.
  • Twin Falls. The first stop on the Hana Highway. A 20-minute walk to a swimming hole. Do this, not the whole road, on a first date.

What to skip on a first date

  • Road to Hana. Eight hours in a car with someone you just met.
  • Sunrise at Haleakala. 3am. No.
  • Mama's Fish House. Save the $400 dinner for date five.
  • Full-day boat trips. Molokini is incredible and there's no exit if it's awkward.
  • Anything in Lahaina town. Still largely closed and still raw for a lot of locals.

Practical tips

  1. Suggest a region, not a venue. "Paia Saturday morning?" lets them pick the spot.
  2. Check drive times. Google Maps is accurate here. Over 40 minutes each way is a second-date distance.
  3. Reservations matter on weekends. Monkeypod and most Wailea bars fill up by 5pm on Fridays.
  4. Resident discounts are everywhere. Ask for the kama'aina rate with a Hawaii ID.
